Roofing Coil Nails Key Characteristics & Features
Large, Wide Head (The Most Important Feature):
Typically 7/16" or 3/8" in diameter.
This large head prevents the shingle from tearing or pulling through under extreme wind uplift forces.
It provides a wide bearing surface to hold the asphalt shingle securely without damaging it and helps create a better seal over the nail hole.
Short, Thick Shank:
Length: Usually between 1 inch to 1-¾ inches long. The length must be sufficient to penetrate through the shingle and at least ¾" into the roof deck (OSB or plywood).
Gauge: Typically a thick 12- or 13-gauge shank. This prevents bending during installation, even when hitting hard spots or deck seams.
Ring Shank (Barbed Shank):
Almost all modern roofing nails feature a ring shank. The rings act like barbs, gripping the wood fibers and providing exceptional withdrawal resistance.
This is critical for meeting high-wind zone building codes and preventing shingles from tearing off in a storm. Smooth shank roofing nails are not recommended for any quality installation.
Corrosion-Resistant Coating:
This is non-negotiable. Roofing nails are exposed to moisture and corrosive chemicals from pressure-treated wood and asphalt shingles.
Hot-Dipped Galvanized (HDG): The most common and cost-effective standard. coated in zinc for good rust resistance.
Stainless Steel: The premium option. Essential in coastal areas with salt spray, or for maximum longevity on any roof. This is often required by building codes in hurricane-prone regions.
Coil Design:
Roofing Coil Nails come collated in a long, coiled strip (usually plastic collation) holding 120 to 300 nails for use in a roofing coil nailer. This high capacity allows roofers to work for long periods without reloading.
