Venezuela metal industry

Jan 03, 2026

Venezuela's metal industry is a core pillar of its economy, centered on vast deposits of iron ore and bauxite (for aluminum) located primarily in the Guiana Highlands and Bolivar State. As of 2026, the sector is characterized by state control, efforts to revitalize production through foreign partnerships, and a significant trade in scrap metal.

Key Commodities and Production

Iron Ore & Steel: Venezuela holds an estimated 2.2 billion tonnes of iron ore reserves. CVG Ferrominera Orinoco is the primary state-run producer, with an average capacity of 20 million tonnes per year, though actual output has fluctuated significantly due to economic instability. In 2024, iron ore exports reached approximately $8 billion, with hematite being the top exported variant.

Aluminum: The country leverages its bauxite reserves and cheap hydroelectric power from the Caroní River to fuel aluminum smelters. It historically ranks among the top 25 global aluminum exporters.

Precious & Strategic Metals: The "Arco Minero" (Mining Arc) region is a major source of gold, silver, and coltan. However, the government periodically suspends exports of these minerals to tighten domestic control.

Major Industry Players

Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG): A state-owned conglomerate that oversees the majority of the heavy metal industry, including iron and aluminum production.

SIDOR (Siderúrgica del Orinoco): The largest steel mill in Venezuela and one of the largest in Latin America, which was nationalized in 2008.

Jindal Steel & Power: In a notable shift toward private-sector involvement, this Indian company took over operations at Venezuela's largest iron-ore complex (Ferrominera) in 2024 to modernize and boost production.

Current Trends and Challenges (2025–2026)

Export Restrictions: As of late 2024 and 2025, the Venezuelan Mining Corporation (CVM) suspended the commercialization and export of several minerals, including gold, copper, and bauxite, to reorganize state revenues.

Scrap Metal Trade: Due to industrial neglect and a lack of investment, many state facilities have been dismantled for scrap metal sales, which has become a significant, though often informal or criminalized, source of revenue.

Market Dynamics: China, Turkey, and Italy remain major trade partners for Venezuelan metals. Despite sanctions, iron ore exports grew at a 2.5% CAGR leading into 2025
