Working process
Wire Feeding & Straightening: A large coil of wire (usually low-carbon steel, Q195 or Q235) is mounted on an unwinding stand (pay-off).The machine automatically pulls the wire through a straightening mechanism to remove any kinks or bends.
Clamping (Gripping): The straightened wire is fed into the machine, where a pair of gripper dies clamps down on the wire to hold it in place for the forming process.
Head Forming (Cold Heading): A mechanical hammer or punch pin strikes the exposed end of the clamped wire. This process, known as cold heading, deforms the metal into the shape of the nail head (flat, round, checkered, etc.).
Point & Cut-Off: While the wire is still clamped, a nail cutter shears the wire at the desired length and simultaneously shapes the nail tip (diamond point, round point, etc.).
Ejection: The gripper dies open, and an expulsion mechanism knocks the finished nail into a collection pan or conveyor system.
Continuous Cycle: The process is repeated immediately, with some high-speed models producing nails at rates well over 1000 pcs per minute.
Specifications
| Feature | Description |
| High Speed Output | Production rates typically range from $160$ to over $700$ pieces per minute (pcs/min), depending on the size of the nail. Advanced rotary machines like those by ENKOTEC can reach up to $2,500$ pcs/min. |
| Capacity (Nail Size) | Machines are categorized by the range of nails they can produce: |
| Nail Diameter: $\sim0.9 \text{ mm}$ to $6.0 \text{ mm}$ (or $20 \text{ SWG}$ to $4 \text{ SWG}$). | |
| Nail Length: $\sim9 \text{ mm}$ to $180 \text{ mm}$ (e.g., $1/2$ inch to $7$ inches). | |
| Automation | They feature automatic wire feeding, automatic central lubrication systems, and often PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) control for automated error detection and shutdown in case of wire jams or power issues. |
| Noise Reduction | Modern designs often feature a fully enclosed construction to reduce noise and dust levels, improving occupational safety. |
| Tooling & Durability | Key components like gripping dies, cutters, and punches are often made from hardened alloys, such as Tungsten Carbide, to ensure long life and reduce replacement frequency. |
