Position & Function in the Machine Cycle
Wire Feed & Clamping: Wire is fed through the die and clamped by grippers.
Punch Advance: The machine's main crankshaft drives the ram forward. The punch, mounted on the ram, moves in a straight line toward the die.
Impact & Heading: The punch's nose strikes the cut end of the wire with tremendous force (several tons), upsetting (mushrooming) the metal and forcing it to flow into the head cavity of the stationary die.
Retraction: The ram retracts, pulling the punch back. The grippers release, and the finished nail is ejected, often pushed out by the next wire feed.

Critical Technical Specifications & Design
Material: Made from high-grade tool steels like H13 hot-work steel, D2, or M2 high-speed steel. They are through-hardened to HRC 56-60 to withstand immense impact without deforming.
Precision Dimensions:
Shank Diameter: Must match the punch holder bore exactly (e.g., 25mm, 32mm).
Nose Profile & Dimensions: Dictated by the desired nail head specification. Tolerance is within ±0.05mm.
Surface Finish: The nose must be mirror-polished to minimize friction, prevent metal sticking (galling), and ensure a smooth nail head surface.
Concentricity: The nose must be perfectly concentric with the shank to ensure even force distribution and prevent eccentric (off-center) heads.
