Components & Terminology

A typical set consists of two distinct blades that work together:

Upper Cutter (Moving Cutter / Punch Cutter):

Mounted on the machine's punch holder or ram.

Moves in a straight line with the punch.

Its leading edge has a precisely ground angled cutting face.

Lower Cutter (Stationary Cutter / Die Cutter):

Mounted on the machine's die holder or base.

Remains stationary relative to the machine frame.

Has a matching angled cutting face.

How They Work (The Pointing & Cutting Cycle)

Step 1: Position

The wire is fed to the correct nail length.

The nail head has just been formed by the punch and die.

The cutters are open, with the wire between them.

Step 2: Shear & Point

The machine's mechanism (often a cam or lever) forces the Upper Cutter to slide down diagonally across the Lower Cutter.

This shearing action does two things:

Cuts the wire: Severs the finished nail from the remaining wire stock.

Forms the point: The angled cutting faces deform the wire as they cut, creating a sharp, chisel-like point on the nail and a matching angled end on the remaining wire (which becomes the next nail's starting tip).

Step 3: Retract & Reset

The upper cutter retracts.

The newly pointed wire end is now ready for the next cycle (it will become the nail head in the next stroke).

The finished, pointed nail drops out of the machine.

Common Problems & Solutions

Burred or Rough PointDull cutting edges, excessive clearance, or misalignment.Sharpen or replace cutters. Realign.

Flat Spot on PointCutters not closing fully or wire slipping before cut.Adjust cutter stroke or check gripper die pressure.

Excessive Flash on PointWorn cutters allowing material to "smear" instead of shearing cleanly.Replace cutters.

Uneven Point (One side long)Misaligned cutters (one blade higher than the other).Realign cutters carefully.

Cutter Chipping or BreakingMaterial too hard (e.g., high-carbon wire), poor heat treatment, or fatigue.Use softer wire or upgrade to carbide-tipped cutters. Ensure proper setup.
